Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It spreads mainly through unprotected sexual contact, but it can also pass from mother to baby during pregnancy (congenital syphilis). If untreated, syphilis can silently damage the heart, brain, nerves, and other organs. Early diagnosis and treatment are very important. Types (Stages) of Syphilis Primary Syphilis Painless sore (chancre) at the site of infection (genitals, mouth, anus). Heals on its own in weeks, but infection remains in the body.
