What is Syphilis?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It spreads mainly through unprotected sexual contact, but it can also pass from mother to baby during pregnancy (congenital syphilis).

If untreated, syphilis can silently damage the heart, brain, nerves, and other organs. Early diagnosis and treatment are very important.

Types (Stages) of Syphilis

Primary Syphilis

Painless sore (chancre) at the site of infection (genitals, mouth, anus).

Heals on its own in weeks, but infection remains in the body.

Secondary Syphilis

Skin rashes, especially on palms and soles.

Fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, hair loss.

Latent Syphilis

No symptoms but bacteria remain hidden.

Can last for years.

Tertiary Syphilis

Serious stage affecting heart, brain, nerves, and bones.

Can cause paralysis, blindness, dementia, and even death.

Congenital Syphilis

Passed from mother to baby during pregnancy.

May cause stillbirth, deformities, or developmental problems.

Diagnosis of Syphilis

Blood Tests: VDRL, RPR, TPHA, FTA-ABS.

Microscopic Tests: Dark-field microscopy (in early lesions).

Pregnancy Screening: All pregnant women should be tested for syphilis.

Treatment Options

Penicillin Injection (Benzathine Penicillin G) – the most effective treatment.

For penicillin-allergic patients: Doxycycline or Azithromycin may be used under medical guidance.

Early treatment cures the infection and prevents complications.

In pregnancy, penicillin is the only safe and effective treatment.

Prevention Tips

✅ Always practice safe sex (use condoms).

✅ Get tested regularly if you are sexually active.

✅ Ensure antenatal check-up during pregnancy.

✅ Complete full course of treatment as advised by your doctor.

सिफलिस क्या है?

सिफलिस एक यौन संचारित रोग (STI) है, जो Treponema pallidum नामक बैक्टीरिया से होता है। यह मुख्यतः असुरक्षित यौन संबंध से फैलता है, साथ ही गर्भावस्था में माँ से बच्चे में भी फैल सकता है (जन्मजात सिफलिस)।

यदि समय पर इलाज न हो, तो यह हृदय, दिमाग, नसों और अन्य अंगों को गंभीर नुकसान पहुँचा सकता है।

सिफलिस के प्रकार (Stages)

प्राथमिक सिफलिस (Primary) – जननांग, मुँह या गुदा पर बिना दर्द का घाव (chancre)।

माध्यमिक सिफलिस (Secondary) – हाथ-पैरों पर दाने, बुखार, बाल झड़ना, गले में खराश।

गुप्त सिफलिस (Latent) – लक्षण नहीं होते लेकिन संक्रमण शरीर में छिपा रहता है।

तृतीयक सिफलिस (Tertiary) – हृदय, मस्तिष्क, नसों और हड्डियों को नुकसान, लकवा, अंधापन, डिमेंशिया।

जन्मजात सिफलिस (Congenital) – गर्भावस्था में माँ से बच्चे में फैलना।

सिफलिस की जाँच

खून की जाँच – VDRL, RPR, TPHA, FTA-ABS।

सूक्ष्मदर्शी परीक्षण – डार्क-फील्ड माइक्रोस्कोपी।

गर्भावस्था में जांच – सभी गर्भवती महिलाओं की अनिवार्य जांच।

इलाज (Treatment)

पेनिसिलिन इंजेक्शन (Benzathine Penicillin G) – सबसे प्रभावी दवा।

एलर्जी वाले रोगियों में – डॉक्टर की देखरेख में Doxycycline या Azithromycin।

गर्भवती महिलाओं में – केवल पेनिसिलिन ही सुरक्षित और प्रभावी है।

बचाव (Prevention)

✅ सुरक्षित यौन संबंध बनाएँ (कंडोम का उपयोग करें)।

✅ यदि आप यौन सक्रिय हैं तो नियमित जाँच कराएँ।

✅ गर्भावस्था में सभी जांच समय पर कराएँ।

✅ डॉक्टर द्वारा बताए पूरे इलाज को पूरा करें।
