Pityriasis versicolor (also known as tinea versicolor) is a common fungal skin infection caused by a type of yeast called Malassezia . This yeast is normally found on the skin, but under certain conditions, it can grow out of control and cause discolored patches on the skin. Key Characteristics: Discolored Patches : These patches can be lighter or darker than the surrounding skin, appearing white, pink, tan, or brown.
