 A goiter is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck below the Adam's apple. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate metabolism, and its enlargement can result from various causes, including iodine deficiency, autoimmune diseases, and thyroid nodules. Causes of Goiter: Iodine Deficiency: Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production. In areas where iodine is scarce in the diet, the thyroid may enlarge to compensate for low hormone production. Graves' Disease: An autoimmune disorder that stimulates the thyroid to produce too much hormone, leading to hyperthyroidism and goiter. Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Another autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid, often leading to hypothyroidism and goiter.
