LIVER FUCTION TEST
A Liver Function Test (LFT) is a group of blood tests that assess the health of the liver by measuring levels of liver enzymes, proteins, and bilirubin. These tests help evaluate liver function and diagnose liver conditions. Here’s an overview of the key components:
1. Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) SGPT
THIS ENZYME PRESENT IN CYTOPLASM OF LIVER CELL
Purpose: Measures the enzyme ALT, which is mainly found in the liver.
Significance: High levels indicate liver damage, such as from hepatitis or cirrhosis.
2. Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) SGOT
THIS IS PRESENT IN MITOCHONDRA SI IT ALSO RAISED IN OTHER CONDITION LIKE ALCOHOLICS MI MUSCLE DAMAGE
Purpose: Measures the enzyme AST, found in both the liver and other organs like the heart.
Significance: Elevated levels can indicate liver damage but may also suggest issues with other organs.
3. Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
Purpose: Measures the enzyme ALP, present in the liver, bile ducts, and bones.
Significance: High levels may suggest bile duct problems, liver damage, or bone disease.
4. Gamma-glutamyl Transferase (GGT)
Purpose: Assesses the enzyme GGT, which helps detect bile duct issues and liver function.
Significance: Elevated GGT levels often indicate bile duct or alcohol-related liver disease.
5. Bilirubin
Purpose: Measures the amount of bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown.
Significance: High levels of bilirubin can lead to jaundice and may indicate liver disease, bile duct problems, or hemolytic anemia.
6. Albumin
Purpose: Measures albumin, a protein made by the liver.
Significance: Low levels of albumin can indicate chronic liver disease or malnutrition.
7. Total Protein
Purpose: Measures all proteins in the blood, including albumin and globulins.
Significance: Abnormal levels may indicate liver disease or other conditions like kidney disease or immune disorders.
8. Prothrombin Time (PT)
Purpose: Measures how long it takes blood to clot.
Significance: Prolonged PT can be a sign of liver disease, as the liver produces clotting factors.
9. Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)
Purpose: An enzyme that may be elevated in various conditions, including liver disease.
Significance: Elevated LDH can indicate liver damage but is not specific to liver function.
