bronchiectasis

Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung condition characterized by the permanent dilation and damage of the bronchi, the airways within the lungs. This structural abnormality leads to recurrent infections, mucus buildup, and impaired clearance of secretions, causing inflammation and damage to the lung tissue over time.

Causes:

Bronchiectasis can result from various factors, including:

Infections: Previous severe lung infections like pneumonia, tuberculosis, or whooping cough.

Immune system disorders: Conditions like primary immunodeficiency diseases that impair the body’s ability to fight infections.

Cystic fibrosis: A genetic condition where thick, sticky mucus damages the lungs.

Autoimmune diseases: Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel disease.

Obstruction of the airways: Due to foreign objects or tumors.

Symptoms:

Common symptoms of bronchiectasis include:

Chronic cough

Large amounts of sputum (mucus) production

Frequent lung infections

Shortness of breath

Wheezing

Fatigue

Hemoptysis (coughing up blood in severe cases)

Diagnosis:

Diagnosing bronchiectasis typically involves:

Chest X-rays or CT scans to visualize airway damage.

Pulmonary function tests to assess lung function.

Sputum cultures to identify infection-causing organisms.

Treatment:

While bronchiectasis is a chronic condition, treatments aim to manage symptoms and prevent disease progression:

Airway clearance techniques: Physical therapy or devices to help clear mucus.

Antibiotics: To treat infections.

Bronchodilators: To open up airways.

Corticosteroids: To reduce inflammation in severe cases.

Surgery: In rare cases, localized removal of damaged lung tissue may be considered.
