ASTHMA

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, which makes breathing difficult. It is a common condition that can affect people of all ages and is often triggered by a combination of environmental factors and genetic predisposition.

Key Features of Asthma:

Airway Inflammation: The airways become inflamed, swollen, and sensitive, making it harder to breathe.

Bronchoconstriction: The muscles around the airways tighten, causing them to narrow.

Excess Mucus Production: The airways produce extra mucus, further obstructing the flow of air.

Common Symptoms:

Wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing)

Shortness of breath

Coughing, especially at night or early in the morning

Chest tightness

Triggers:

Asthma attacks can be triggered by a variety of factors, including:

Allergens (pollen, dust mites, pet dander)

Irritants (smoke, pollution, strong odors)

Respiratory infections (cold or flu)

Physical activity (exercise-induced asthma)

Cold air

Stress or strong emotions

Types of Asthma:

EXRINSIC ASTHMA /CHILDHOOD ASTHAMA /Allergic Asthma: Triggered by allergens.

INTRINSIC ASTHMA / ADULTHOOD .Non-Allergic Asthma: Triggered by irritants such as smoke, pollution, or chemicals.

Exercise-Induced Asthma: Symptoms occur during or after exercise.

Occupational Asthma: Caused by exposure to workplace irritants.

Diagnosis:

Asthma is diagnosed through:

Pulmonary function tests (like spirometry) to measure how well the lungs are working

Peak flow monitoring to measure lung function over time

Allergy tests if allergies are suspected to be contributing factors

Treatment:

Asthma is a manageable condition, but it cannot be cured. Treatment focuses on controlling symptoms and preventing flare-ups:

Quick-relief (rescue) medications: Typically inhalers like albuterol, used to quickly open up airways during an asthma attack.

Long-term control medications: Such as inhaled corticosteroids (e.g., fluticasone) to reduce inflammation in the airways.

Lifestyle changes: Avoiding triggers, following an asthma action plan, and regular monitoring with a healthcare provider.

Asthma can range from mild to severe, and with proper management, many people with asthma can lead a healthy, active life.
