WHAT IS HBA1C/GLYCOSYLATED HEAMOGOBINE
HbA1c, or glycated hemoglobin, is a form of hemoglobin that is chemically linked with glucose in the blood. It gives an indication of your average blood glucose levels over the past two to three months. This is particularly useful in managing diabetes, as it provides a longer-term picture of blood sugar control compared to daily glucose monitoring. The higher the HbA1c level, the poorer the blood sugar control.
For most people with diabetes, the target HbA1c level is below 7%. However, individual targets may vary based on factors like age, presence of other health conditions, and individual circumstances. Maintaining HbA1c within target range reduces the risk of long-term complications associated with diabetes, such as heart disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, and eye damage. Regular monitoring of HbA1c is an important part of managing diabetes effectively.
