thyrotoxicosis

Thyrotoxicosis is a condition caused by excessive thyroid hormone in the body. It typically arises from an overactive thyroid gland, a condition known as hyperthyroidism. This can result from various causes, including autoimmune diseases like Graves' disease, thyroid nodules or goiter, or inflammation of the thyroid gland (thyroiditis).

Symptoms of thyrotoxicosis can vary widely but often include weight loss, rapid heart rate, sweating, tremors, anxiety, heat intolerance, and fatigue. Treatment depends on the underlying cause but may involve medications to regulate thyroid hormone levels, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid gland.

Regular monitoring and management are essential to prevent complications such as heart problems, osteoporosis, and thyroid storm—a severe, potentially life-threatening form of thyrotoxicosis.
