DIABETIC NEPHROPATHY

Diabetic nephropathy is a serious kidney-related complication of diabetes. It's a progressive kidney disease caused by damage to the small blood vessels in the kidneys due to high levels of blood sugar. Over time, this damage can lead to kidney failure.

The risk factors for developing diabetic nephropathy include:

Duration of diabetes: The longer you have diabetes, the higher your risk.

Poorly controlled blood sugar levels: High blood sugar damages the kidneys over time.

High blood pressure (hypertension): This can worsen kidney damage.

Genetics: Some people may have a genetic predisposition to developing diabetic nephropathy.

Smoking: Smoking can exacerbate kidney damage in people with diabetes.

Obesity: Being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing diabetes and its complications.

Early stages of diabetic nephropathy may not cause symptoms, but as the condition progresses, symptoms can include swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, or hands; high blood pressure; fatigue; nausea and vomiting; and changes in urine output.

Management and treatment of diabetic nephropathy involve controlling blood sugar levels through diet, exercise, and medication, as well as managing blood pressure with medication. In severe cases, dialysis or kidney transplantation may be necessary.

Preventing diabetic nephropathy involves managing diabetes effectively by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, not smoking, and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Regular monitoring of kidney function through blood and urine tests is also crucial for early detection and intervention.
